Some Driving Hints
Seat Belts
· FSL (Florida State law) requires safety belts be worn by all passengers, regardless of age. This is strictly enforced.
· Children aged four and under must be in a child’s car seat.
Emergency Vehicles
· U.S Law states that all Emergency vehicles have right of way. If an Emergency vehicle is approaching from behind pull over where it’s safe to do so and allow it to pass.
· When approaching a stopped Emergency vehicle on a narrow road, slow down and pass with caution, U.S law requires that you merge into the next lane away from the Emergency vehicle (on a two, three or four lane highway).
Headlights
· FSL requires that you turn on your headlights at dusk, in fog or in the rain.
· Please note that Florida’s roads become very slippery in the rain. The rain can be so severe that visibility is reduced to only a few feet or yards, so please take extra care.
Drinking and Driving
· Florida’s DUI Laws (Driving while under the influence) are very strict. If you are caught with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 or Higher, you will be arrested and have your driving license suspended indefinitely, please do not drink and drive, always have an alcohol free designated driver.
Red Traffic Lights
· You may turn right if the lights are red, but only after you have come to a complete stop, checked that there’s no traffic approaching from the left and there are no signs posted saying,
NO TURN ON RED.
Stop Signs
· FSL requires that your vehicle comes to a complete stop before proceeding at Stop signs. At a 2 or 3-way Stop sign cross section, the vehicle that arrives at the cross-section first has the right of way, then the next vehicle and so on.
School Buses
· U.S and FSL requires that when approaching a school bus on a two lane highway and the bus has stopped to load or unload children, you must stop if the RED flashing STOP sign is out. If you are behind a school bus which has stopped to load or unload children and the RED flashing STOP sign is out you must not pass.
· Always use caution when approaching any school bus which has stopped.
Finally, it will soon become apparent that Florida residents seldom use their direction indecators and will turn and move from lane to lane without warning, SO PLEASE BEWARE.
Take care and drive safely
